How to Choose a UI Kit for Your Next Project

Published October 2026 · ramza.shop

A good UI kit can save weeks of design work, and a bad one can cost you more time than building from scratch. Before you download or buy any kit, run it through the checklist below.

1. Check what is actually included

Count the components, not the screens. A kit with 40 polished screens but only a handful of reusable components forces you to redraw the same buttons and inputs again and again. Look for buttons, form fields, navigation, cards, modals, tables, tabs, alerts and empty states, each with hover, focus, disabled and error states.

2. Look for design tokens

Tokens are named values for colours, type sizes, spacing and radii. If a kit uses them (as Figma styles or variables), changing a brand colour takes seconds. If colours are hard-coded on every layer, rebranding becomes a manual chore.

3. Auto layout and variants

In Figma, well-built components use auto layout so they grow with their content, and variants so one component covers every state. Open a button and resize its text: if the padding breaks, the kit is not built properly.

4. Accessibility basics

Check contrast between text and background (WCAG recommends at least 4.5:1 for body text), visible focus styles, and tap targets of roughly 44 by 44 pixels on mobile. A kit that ignores these will pass the problems on to your users.

5. Responsive thinking

Does the kit show mobile, tablet and desktop versions of key layouts? Even if you only need one, seeing how a navigation collapses tells you whether the designer thought beyond a single screen size.

6. Licence and file format

Read the licence: can you use it in client work, can you use it in a product you sell, and can you share the file itself? Most kits allow the first two and forbid the last. Also confirm the format matches your tool (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD or code).

7. Test with one real screen

Before committing, rebuild one real screen from your project using the kit. If it takes under an hour and still looks good, the kit fits. If you keep fighting it, move on.
